Well-Designed Bedding Sets that Feel Good - how do you choose them?

Bedding sets are a crucial part of any bedroom! When you consider that the average person spends about 26 years sleeping in their life, it kind of makes you rethink your whole bedroom bedding strategy, doesn't it? So, I am not exaggerating when I say that choosing the right bedding set can help you create a space that is comfortable, inviting and probably essential for a good night's sleep. Not only that, but it can also help you create a space that is stylish and reflects your personal style, your own personality. With the right bedding set, you can have a bedroom that is both cosy AND fashionable.

In this comprehensive guide to bedding sets, we will explore together everything you need to know about choosing the perfect bedding set for your needs and preferences. From materials and thread counts to styles and designs, this is everything you need to know!

What fabrics should you choose for your bedding sets?

This surely isn’t news to you, but I’d like to highlight that the fabric of your bedding set can greatly impact your comfort level and the quality of your sleep. I’ll walk you through some of the most common materials used in bedding sets:

Natural Materials for Bedding Sets

Cotton: Cotton is a popular choice for bedding due to its softness, breathability, and durability. Cotton bedding comes in a variety of weaves and thread counts*, making it easy to find the perfect set for your needs.

*I’ll cover weaves and thread counts later in the article, don’t worry.

Cotton feels soft and is also durable, so it makes it a popular choice

  • Silk: Silk bedding sets are luxurious and soft, providing a smooth and silky feel. However, they can be expensive and require special care.

  • Linen: Linen ones are lightweight and breathable, perfect for warm weather. They also have a unique texture that adds a rustic charm to any bedroom.

  • Wool: Wool bedding is warm and cosy, making it ideal for colder climates. It is also hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking.

  • Bamboo: Bamboo bedding sets are eco-friendly and sustainable, as bamboo is a fast-growing and renewable resource. They are also soft and breathable, making them ideal for hot sleepers.

Synthetic Materials

  • Polyester: Polyester bedding sets are affordable and easy to care for, but they may not be as breathable as natural materials.

  • Microfiber: Microfiber bedding sets are soft and durable, but they can be prone to pilling and may not be as breathable as natural materials.

  • Rayon: Rayon bedding sets are soft and silky, but they may require special care to maintain their quality.

  • Nylon: Nylon sets are durable and easy to care for, but they may not be as breathable as natural materials.

  • Acrylic: Acrylic bedding sets are affordable and easy to care for, but they may not be as soft as natural materials.

When choosing a material for your bedding set, consider your personal preferences, climate, and budget. Natural materials are generally more breathable and comfortable, but they can be more expensive. Synthetic materials are often more affordable and easy to care for, but they may not provide the same level of comfort as natural materials.

Thread Count and Weave

Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. A higher thread count does not necessarily mean better quality, as the quality of the threads and the weave also play a role. However, a thread count of 200-400 is generally considered good quality for cotton bedding sets.

When choosing a thread count, I always advise my clients to consider their personal preferences. A higher thread count may feel softer and more luxurious, but it can also be heavier and less breathable, so keep that in mind too.

Weave

The weave of your bedding set refers to the way the threads are woven together. Here are some popular weaves:

  • Percale: Percale is a plain weave that is lightweight and breathable, making it ideal for warm weather.

  • Sateen: Sateen is a weave that creates a silky and lustrous finish, making it ideal for a luxurious feel.

  • Twill: Twill is a weave that creates a diagonal pattern, making it durable and long-lasting.

  • Jersey: Jersey is a knit weave that is stretchy and soft, making it ideal for a cosy feel.

When choosing a weave, consider your personal preferences and the climate you live in. A lightweight and breathable weave may be ideal for warm weather, while a heavier and more durable weave may be better for colder climates. The weave of your bedding is what makes you feel comfortable during the night, and if you've ever been disappointed when you purchased an attractive set only to realise how thin it spreads on the bed, this is why.

Styles and Designs of Bedding Sets

When it comes to the patterns you go for, opt for the ones that speak to you and also go well with the general look & feel of your bedroom

Needless to say, the style and design of your bedding set can also impact the overall look and feel of your bedroom. Here are some popular styles and designs, but, as always, keep in mind that, at the end of the day it is up to your personal choice:

Styles

  • Solid colours: Solid colour bedding sets are timeless and versatile, making them easy to match with any decor.

  • Patterns: Patterned bedding sets come in a variety of styles, including stripes, polka dots, floral, and geometric. They can add a pop of colour and personality to your bedroom.

  • Embroidery: Embroidered bedding sets feature intricate designs and patterns that add a touch of elegance and sophistication.

  • Jacquard: Jacquard bedding sets feature a raised pattern that adds texture and depth to your bedding.

Designs

  • Traditional: Traditional bedding sets feature classic designs and patterns, such as damask or toile, that add a timeless elegance to your bedroom.
